Spring in Review

Exact Solar has kept up with our commitment to community involvement this past spring.

Here are a few of the highlights:

Exact Solar Selected as Official Solarize Philly Installer

Solarize Philly is a subsidiary of the Philadelphia Energy Authority, an organization dedicated to accelerating Philadelphia’s renewable energy goals. It’s a cooperative purchasing program, where the City of Philadelphia connects individuals and organizations interested in “going solar” with high-quality, vetted installers. Applications opened last year for new installers to join, and Exact Solar made the cut as one of the highest-quality installers in Philadelphia! We’re also continuing our work as a partner to Solarize Delco and Solarize Southeast PA

Solar Power Fuels Sustainable Learning at ASPIRA

Earlier this year, ASPIRA Charter School in North Philly commissioned us to build a very special system to help grow their eco-friendly education program. The solar system we’ve installed in their school powers a greenhouse and two “grow towers” on site. This urban garden will be used to grow organic produce that students will cook and serve to parents and staff in an onsite “restaurant.” The extra produce will be taken to local farmer’s markets by students and sold to continuously fund the growing program. This is a very exciting project for many members of the team, but especially for Stanislav, because this is the first ground-mounted solar system he’s designed himself! You can read his LinkedIn post about it here. In September, we have plans to host a ribbon-cutting event in celebration of their new system!

Cailynn Honors Philadelphia OIC’s Legacy at Anniversary Gala

In January, we sponsored the Philadelphia OIC’s 60th Anniversary Gala. Several of our team members, including graduates who were hired from Philadelphia OIC, attended the gala to represent Exact Solar. Our very own Cailynn Chase was invited to speak at the gala about her experience with OIC’s training programs. This is what Cailynn had to say about the experience:

“To celebrate the Philadelphia OIC’s 60th anniversary, I was asked, along with two other OIC alumni, to participate in the creation of a short promotional film and to write a speech for the anniversary gala speaking on what led me to OIC in the first place. The film played for the 500+ attendees of the gala (some of whom included Doug and his wife, David Hammes of the Sales Team, and Joe Cassell, a fellow OIC alumnus and one of our incredible install crew members), and as the three of us made our speeches, we also had the duty of recognizing important donors and sponsors of OIC’s various programs.

As a graduate of the Smart Energy Technical Training program, I was to recognize PECO’s Mike Innocenzo as the 2024 Workforce Partner Award recipient. The three of us former students who were asked to speak were invited after the gala to attend a Philadelphia 76ers game where we had club access and court-level seats.”

Exact Solar Advocates for a Greener Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is operating on an outdated energy standard. The AEPS (Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard) is what Pennsylvania uses to mandate how much renewable power needs to be invested in at the state level. It hasn’t been updated since Pennsylvania met its (embarrassingly small) renewable energy targets in 2021, and needs to be changed if PA is going to compete with neighboring states. If you’d like to learn more, we’ve put out two articles on our blog about this fight:

Installation Crews Excel in Team Building Challenge

Installation Crews Excel in
Team Building Challenge

On the morning of May 31st, our installation crews participated in an engaging team-building activity led by Paul. The four teams—Service Squad, Sky Riders, Sons of Apollo, and Smooth Operators—were each given identical sets of wooden pieces along with a diagram depicting how they should be assembled. The initial task was to assemble the pieces as quickly as possible. Service Squad finished first, while Smooth Operators took the longest.

However, the real challenge began after the initial assembly: teams had to disassemble their creations and then reassemble them, this time employing a thoughtful and strategic process to complete the task in the shortest time. Impressively, Smooth Operators, despite their slow start, excelled in the second round by finishing in just 37 seconds. Service Squad followed with a time of 59 seconds.

This exercise not only fostered teamwork but also highlighted the importance of strategy and process efficiency. By participating in activities like these, our teams learn to communicate more effectively, think critically under pressure, and collaborate to overcome challenges. These skills are directly transferable to our daily operations, making our teams stronger, more cohesive, and better equipped to provide exceptional service to our customers!

Employee Adventures and Celebrations

Aaron Nichols’ New Adventure-mobile

Last month, Aaron road-tripped to Missouri to pick up his dream vehicle, a 2010 Toyota Tacoma. As soon as he got back to Colorado, he installed a Roof Nest pop-up tent on his top racks to outfit it for backcountry camping. With the backcountry cell tower they share, he and his girlfriend are now set up to work from and live in the woods for a week at a time.

Memorial Day Skydiving

On Memorial Day Weekend, Joe Cassell took to the skies above Williamstown, New Jersey to flutter to earth under a parachute. He jumped with Cross Keys Skydiving, and had this to say about the experience:

“I jumped my first time with two other brothers for this Memorial Day weekend to commemorate my grandfather who was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. Skydiving is an experience for those who are looking for a thrilling adventure, a great memory, and an achievement to knock off your bucket list.

I would recommend Cross Keys, they have great instructors, friendly staff and crew, and a professional outlook on skydiving.”

Happily Ever After

On December 30th, Alyssa Christopher, now Alyssa Morley, exchanged vows with her wife, Brianna, at the historic Merchant’s Exchange in Philadelphia in a private, small gathering with their closest friends and family.

In the new year, Alyssa and Brianna embarked on a memorable honeymoon adventure. Their journey began with a magical visit to Disney World, followed by a relaxing cruise to Nassau, Bahamas, and the beautiful Castaway Cay island.

The Newest Addition to the Bray Family

Say hello to Panda, the newest addition to the Bray household! At only 6 months old, Panda is already tipping the scales at 95 pounds! As he familiarizes himself with his new surroundings, he’s settling in comfortably and making himself right at home.

ASPIRA Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

On Friday, September 6th, we’ll be holding a ribbon-cutting at ASPIRA Charter School to celebrate the new solar system going live! Several local non-profits, including PennEnvironment, Generation180, and Solarize Philly, will be in attendance. We’ll also be inviting local representatives. It’s going to be the solar-related social event of the season, so make sure you mark your calendars. If you’re interested in attending, please contact the marketing team for more details!

Doylestown Arts Festival

We’re happy to announce that Exact Solar will once again sponsor the Doylestown Arts Festival, taking place on September 7th and 8th this year. We’re proud to support it for the second year in a row and encourage our team to attend and enjoy the talent of our community.

I highly recommend this company. They did a 26 solar panel rooftop install and 3 Enphase 5P battery installation for me and the installation was just as expected. Work was super clean and they did the necessary testing and commissioning, and did the coordination with MET-ED to get the PTO. We did the install in March and even though the system was installed in the middle of a billing month, my bill for this month was around $10 (which was mainly utility fees) where it normally would have been $120.

Check out one of our most recent Google reviews from a satisfied customer, Ray Thierrin, who resides in Easton, PA. Mr. Thierrin discovered Exact Solar through EnergySage, one of our primary lead sources, which allows consumers to compare and research solar companies. We want to congratulate our team for their hard work and dedication that has resulted in another satisfied customer. Thank you for ensuring our customers are well-informed, educated, and, most importantly, happy with their solar experience.

A Note from Doug

“Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals…

Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
– Angela Lee Duckworth

We have many exciting updates to share as we close out the spring and head into the summer weather. First, we secured our first project that was over 1 MW (that’s 1,000 kW), for Americold (cold storage facility) in Vineland, NJ. This is an exciting milestone for us as we grow our team and expand our capabilities. We earned this opportunity through excellent installation work and execution on prior projects for the same developer, so it’s an honor to have the chance to do higher-stakes work for them and really add to our resume. Kudos especially to Vlad for really developing a key relationship for us that led to this!

We recently won a bid to do a large project for a new police station in Upper Dublin township and another commercial project to install solar for a church in South Jersey. Both were secured by Joe Tarzia, so he really had a terrific sales month, and he worked his butt off to land both of these jobs.

This morning, we found out that we have been recognized by the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce as an honoree for the Greater Philadelphia Civic 50, our 3rd year in a row receiving this honor for our community connectedness, sponsorships, and our work advocating for solar policy in our region. Of all the honors we receive, this is the one I’m always the most proud of. It embodies the fact that we don’t just do a great job technically installing solar, but we do things “the right way” as a local, community-connected business. I’m very excited to be able to share this with our customers and new prospective customers moving forward. Special thank you to Alyssa, Samantha, Cailynn, and the rest of the team, who put so much into pursuing this award!

We also recently were honored as the top solar installer in Pennsylvania by EnergySage. This is a big honor as well, as it came from interviews and surveys of our actual customers by EnergySage, and we were selected from a competitive field. Very cool! This award is mostly a tip of the hat to our installers. You guys consistently do such a great job and leave our customers impressed, many of whom share back great reviews and positive feedback to EnergySage. We got a nice note from EnergySage when they let us know about this award that our customers said some really great things about us.

With the expanded amount of work coming up this summer, I anticipate we’ll be able to welcome a few more team members, which I’m looking forward to. We’re also looking to add Aaron Nichols to go from a part-time freelancer helping us with marketing to now a full-time marketing team member. We’ll be looking for additional help in the office as well. Please let us know if you have any friends that you think would fit our culture here and help us. We always value referrals!

Speaking of referrals, I’d also like to thank Josh for sending a really nice referral over to sales recently. It helps us so much when we get nice leads like that from our own personal networks. I hope to see more of this as we go forward. It feels great knowing our team is confident in the work we do and happy to encourage friends and family to come to us for solar.

I hope everyone has some exciting plans as we enter this peak time of year weather-wise. For my family, we’ll be spending some weekends down the shore, which is always my favorite thing to do. Whatever your summer plans may be, I hope you all have some enjoyable time with family, weekend travels, vacations, or other adventures to look forward to.

Thank you for all that you do to make this such a fantastic place to work. I’ve never been prouder or more excited about what we do and how we go about doing it.

Best,
Doug
